I wrote a while ago about how I use the Indigenous News Updates as a resource and place them on the web for all to see. I had a few comments and a few emails asking me to continue with them. I have continued and I have now started categorising them as I go along. This means the headlines are not as immediate as they used to be but allows you to look at categories you have an interest in and to ignore the rest (which I hope you won’t).

Quite often headlines may fit into two categories. As an example, articles on Indigenous housing in the Northern Territory may fit into the categories ‘Housing’ and ‘Intervention’, Dance may fall into either ‘culture’ or ‘art’. So where do I put them? It all depends. If the article is on “professional” indigenous dancers then under ‘art’ it goes. If nothing really pushes it to one of the categories I will place it in the one closest to being published.

The Justice category covered articles concerning social justice as well as native title and criminal charges. I will now be splitting this up into ‘Social Justice’ and ‘Legal’. We’ll see how it goes.

I have also extended the range of sources I am collecting news headlines from. As well as keeping the main sources such as ABC, The Australian, Sydney Morning Herald etc I am also including articles from major overseas articles such as the Washington Post.

As well as reaching around the world I am also finding articles from Australia’s local and regional newspapers such as the article from the Singleton Argus on X-Strata donating money to a cultural centre and the Fraser Coast Chronicle focusing on Indigenous Achievers.
