Finke Desert Race

Held each Queens Birthday long weekend (2nd weekend in June) the Finke Desert Race is the largest off road race in the southern hemisphere. It is a two day event running through a variety of desert terrains from Alice Springs to Apatula (Finke) Community. On the route it crosses the Finke River, the oldest river in the world.

It is recognised as the richest Off Road Race in the Southern Hemisphere with the added reputation of being one of the most difficult courses in one of the most remote places in the world.

Starting in 1976 as a “there and back” challenge for local motorcyclists the Finke Desert Race was born. Initially a motorcycle race, buggies and cars joined the race in 1988. The race is open to allcomers with over 600 competitors racing over the 460km course.

A mate of mine races. That’s his buggy above. And here’s a video of him only 34km into the race. I think the sponsorship decals need to be in a different place.

And to finish off here is some in race maintenance using speciality precision tools.

Have a Pleasant Sunday Afternoon wherever you are.
