Out bush there isn’t too many reflective guide posts by the side of the road. If they are present it is usually on a bend to ensure drivers don’t go off the edge quite often rolling the car.

microsleep can kill sign

So you concentrate on driving on the slippery gravel surface rounding a bend and you see a sign down at the base of the reflective post. You try to see what is says:

A Microsleeps Can Kill in Seconds

I would suggest that sliding your car over the edge while reading a sign in a dopey position will kill you as quickly as a microsleep.

As usual clicking on the images will give you an enlarged picture.

Wreck Of The Week

by Robbo on March 10, 2010

in Wreck Of The Week

As cars break down and can’t be repaired by our Bush Mechanics they are left by the side of the road where they are quickly pulled apart for spares.

Every now and then a bulldozer or grader comes along and pushes them, along with other roadside debri back into the scrub.

Wreck Of The Week

in Wreck Of The Week

We have a guest post today from Wolf Cocklin. Wolf’s the bloke I took the idea from for putting a few of my driving videos up on the web.

This picture is from his 2009 trip along one of Australia’s most famous routes, the Oodnadatta Track. As well as today’s Wreck Of The Week picture Wolf also has a blog post up of this trip at his blog “Insert Clever Title Here” which includes video of the 166km trip condensed into 6 minutes.

Night Drive Home

by Robbo on February 12, 2010

in Remote Living

Following on from my sunset and thunderstorm pics I posted last night are some short vids of the drive home. Now they aren’t as good as this road trip by Wolf Cocklin (I am waiting for his post on his tech set up).

In the past I have posted vids of peak hour traffic and also driving in wet conditions.

These aren’t very exciting but are intended to show the vast difference compared to driving on highways. I do between 50-60000kms every year, the vast majority on rough outback roads.

These vids were taken with a storm all around, heavy cloud, no moon and of course being in a very remote area there is no ambient light at all from cities or towns. It is very dark. If you watch carefully you may see the occasional lightning strike. One in particular was a little close. But luckily – no camels!
